I had my first episode of depression at 18, discovered exercise at 19/20 which helped me to come off anti-depressants. Diagnosed with borderline personality disorder at 23 and prescribed anti-psychotics. On top of that I Suffered with post natal depression after 3rd pregnancy.
Gilly cook offered free 202020 (aerobics, circuits, Matt work) classes to help PND, also offered boxercise classes to help with confidence, assertiveness. After doing her classes for a long time she started asking for my help to set up the sessions and look after newbies. I loved it, I’d helped that person feel great!! and then I had to go back to work at the pub after maternity leave and it was awful, I wanted to help people improve their lives and mental health not make it worse! Doing her classes helped me make some of the best friends I’ve ever made.
These People showed faith in me when I had no faith in myself. Believed in me that I could do 1 tough mudder and now I’ve done 4, a rough runner 2 10k runs, 10k muddy stampede, 20 mile walk and doing rat race (20 miles) dirty weekend next year!
I love working with people, being around people. I’ve always tried to do a job that helps people feel better about themselves. Hairdresser, carer, barmaid. Now I can make a real difference to people’s lives like training has to mine.
I’m open about my journey with my mental health and very passionate about helping people who struggle with theirs and using exercise as a vehicle to help improve it like it did so much with me.
