Originally designed to mimic military style basic training, the modern bootcamp fitness program has evolved into an effective and efficient small group workout led by trained fitness professionals and ideal for both men and women “campers”.

Bootcamps combine several fitness styles resulting in a productive, time-efficient program that can produce significant physical transformation including improved body composition, increased strength, anaerobic and aerobic fitness, overall athletic conditioning, and significant weight loss.

A recent research study conducted by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that the average participant burns approximately 9.8 calories per minute during a typical boot-camp workout, which equals nearly 450 calories during the entire 45-minute boot-camp. Participants also experienced muscle-building benefits from calisthenics used in bootcamp training including pushups and pushup variations, squat thrusts, etc. These basic pushing and pulling movements for the upper and lower body as well as core training performed in a circuit or “interval” style format greatly increase the calorie burning and cardiorespiratory benefits of training in a shorter amount of time.

Bootcamps are an ideal setting for interval training and High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) as bootcamps are designed to include periods of high intensity training interspersed with exercises that are lower in aerobic intensity. This built in HIIT training will increase your metabolism, develop more fast-twitch muscle fibers, increase lean muscle tissue, stimulate production and release of beneficial hormones and burn more calories in far less time than traditional workouts performed in the gym.

Bootcamps center around bodyweight training using compound, multi-joint exercises that work several large muscle groups at once, an efficient training approach that also strengthens the smaller stabilizer muscles which improves joint stability and strength. Bodyweight calisthenics also stimulates and strengthens your core muscles as they are used to stabilize your body as you train.

Bootcamps are also cost effective. You won’t need to spend money on expensive home gym equipment or separate gym membership fees. Bootcamp group training costs less per participant for expert instruction, compared to 1-on-1 personal training. An added benefit is the sense of camaraderie as participants feed off each other’s energy, as well as a sense of accomplishment and accountability to the other members in the group. These factors lead to a better workout, faster results, and greater adherence to the program overall.

If your goal is to have fun, get in great shape, enhance your aerobic capacity, control your weight and live a healthier, more active lifestyle – a fitness bootcamp might be just what you need.
